What's the Dofference Between CBD & THC?

What’s the Difference Between CBD and THC?

CBD is making waves for its effects against epilepsy, pain, anxiety, depression, chronic diseases, and insomnia — to name just a few. But because CBD is connected with THC there is much confusion surrounding both. Herbal Pharm Rx, a purveyor of CBD products, oils, and tinctures, will explain the very important difference in this blog post. Shop online with us today!

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is a cannabinoid, a chemical compound found in both the cannabis plant and the hemp plant. The hemp plant is a type of cannabis plant. Albeit both the cannabis plant and the hemp plant have been around for centuries, it has only been in the past few decades that these important plants’ components have been dissected, studied, and understood.

There is a system in the body called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Unlike the digestive and circulatory system, this system was only discovered to exist in the 1990s (which is why you didn’t study it in high school health class or biology class). This system affects mostly the nervous system, specifically the brain. It is composed of endocannabinoids which are neurotransmitters and receptors found in the brain, spine, and nerves. The ECS is involved in regulating important body processes, such as the sensation of pain, memory, appetite, mood, and fertility. There is strong evidence that the ECS also affects our immune system, which is responsible for a variety of conditions such as Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease. Inflammation can be an underlying contributor to a lot of health conditions, including depression.

There are two main receptors, CB1 and CB2, in the endocannabinoid system.

It’s important to note that the ECS wants to maintain homeostasis in the body, which is the body’s desire to be in balance. For example, when we’re stressed, cortisols are introduced to the body in case we need to fight or flee. However, we can get too much of these in our body. The ECS uses its natural endocannabinoid in the body to bring your stress levels back down to normal, restoring homeostasis.

Why should you care about all this? Since CBD is a cannabinoid, which is very similar to endocannabinoids, CBD can influence these receptors and interact with them to mitigate important symptoms, such as pain.

THC (short for tetrahydrocannabinol) is very similar to CBD. It is derived from the same source: cannabis plant (and to a lesser extent, the hemp plant). It is a cannabinoid. It impacts the ECS through receptors. The main difference between CBD and THC is that THC is psychoactive, meaning it gives you the feeling of being high; whereas CBD does not. THC mimics the natural chemical anandamide by attaching, influencing, and activating CB1 and CB2, which affects things such as thinking, memory, pleasure, movements, concentration, coordination, and sensory and time perception.

THC stimulates cells in the brain to release dopamine, creating euphoria, according to NIDA. It also interferes with how information is processed in the hippocampus, which is part of the brain responsible for forming new memories.

THC can induce hallucinations, change your thinking, and cause delusions. On average, the effects of THC can last about two hours and kick in from 10 to 30 minutes after ingestion. Impairment of motor skills can still be in effect even after the high has stopped. It is very important not to use THC and operate any kind of motorized vehicle, including but not limited to automobiles of any variety, ATVs, tractors, and boats. In fact, THC is it is the second-most common psychoactive substance found in drivers, after alcohol, reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

CBD is non-psychoactive; THC is psychoactive. CBD is legal; THC is not legal except for medical purposes and then only in certain states. CBD actually counteracts THC. CBD causes no impairments; THC affects memory, motor skills, coordination, thought processes, and sensory perceptions. THC activates CB1 receptor; CBD inhibits it.

For those suffering from chronic diseases and ailments, anything that can help mitigate the effects can be life-giving. Both CBD and THC offer relief because they affect the ECS. However, CBD is the good, big brother in that it won’t cause any intoxicating effects. THC affects the brain in a much more potent fashion, causing psychoactive elements that most people aren’t looking for, especially kids (Side note: THC is especially damaging to the brain when taken by our youth as studies show an impact on cognitive abilities and a decrease in IQ and memories). THC is largely illegal except for medicinal purposes in certain states. CBD is for the most part legal as long as the THC component in CBD is less than .3 percent.

CBD and its abundant products is the substance you may want for certain conditions. Insomnia, depression, anxiety, epilepsy, chronic pain, inflammation, and autoimmune diseases are just some of the conditions experienced by millions of people that inhibits their quality of life, which CBD may be able to help with.
